How is the weather in Volgograd?

Posted in , ,

To the world, Russian weather is known to be extreme.  In general, of course most only think about the frigid cold, but often forget the scorching heat during summer. Volgograd, the city of heroes, which is situated at the south-eastern European part of Russia, is not excluded from this widely known fact. Like any other city in Russia, it is icily cold during its peak winter, and intensely hot during it’s peak summer. There are of course a few things which only those who live in Volgograd, for at least a year can testify to. The weather here in Volgograd, the temperature to be exact is not just extreme, but also erratic and equally unpredictable. It is never easy to dress up with the same number of layers of sweaters throughout winter, for today might be -1, and tomorrow it is possible for the temperature to drop by another 10 degrees. That is why, we Volgogradians, are always on a look-out, for it may rain, shine and snow all on the very same day! Of course it’s not as bad as it sounds.

As unpredictable the weather here may be, we are blessed to be situated at the south, where the air is considerably humid, in comparison to other cities in Russia. The mean percentage of humidity throughout the year averages around 70, making it comfortable to breathe despite the cruel cold and sweltering heat.

Geographically, Volgograd is 80-kilometer (50 mi) long, north to south, situated on the western bank of the Volga River, with the altitude of 42 meter (138ft). These facts contribute to the reason as to why this city is generally windy. Over the course of the year typical wind speeds vary from 1 mph to 17 mph (light air to moderate breeze), rarely exceeding 26 mph (strong breeze).

The highest average wind speed of 11 mph (gentle breeze) occurs around February 8, during which the average daily maximum wind speed is 17 mph (moderate breeze).

The lowest average wind speed of 7 mph (light breeze) occurs around July 7, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 14 mph (moderate breeze). The wind is most often out of the east (20% of the time), west (15% of the time), and south east (13% of the time).
